Who We Are
We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization that aims to increase access to music education by working in communities with local teachers, music educators, and professional musicians.
For the past three years, Notes for Change, Inc. has run a music program in Pisco, Peru called the “Pisco Music Program“. This is an annual month-long after school youth music festival focusing on Peruvian culture and music. Notes for Change, Inc. founder, Elizabeth Moulthrop will be returning to Pisco this summer (August 2014) to continue working with the students in the Pisco Music Program by running guitar workshops.
Notes for Change, Inc. would also like to support local music programs, closer to home, similar to the Pisco Music Program in Peru. NFC is launching a new initiative to support programs in New Jersey that use music as a vehicle for social change. This summer we plan to underwrite a summer music program for Wharton Music Center’s El Sistema-Inspired Program, Paterson Music Project. Currently fifty students receive six hours of intensive musical instruction each week during the school year. Our plan is to enable Wharton Music Center to provide these students with the opportunity to continue their musical study during the summer.
In order to raise funds for these initiatives, both at home and in Peru, NFC hosts annual benefit concerts and special events. Local professional musicians, teachers, and students join together to present high quality, community concerts. This is a chance to for musicians to give back to the community as well as advocate for music and music education around the world. Click here to learn about upcoming events.
What We Believe
We believe that music can be used to empower children through the growth of musical skills, discipline, character, and self esteem. We believe that music can promote community, autonomy, teamwork, and confidence; the very skills that create successful adults. Notes for Change, Inc. accomplishes this by creating a positive learning environment, one which provides consistency and continuity.
We hope that our project in Pisco, Peru is the first of many music initiatives to come. Note by note, music makes the world a better place, bridging people and communities.
